When buying used and refurbished hardware, you'll keep coming across the condition classes Grade A, Grade B and Grade C. They describe only the cosmetic condition – the technical function is tested and fault-free in every class. Knowing the differences lets you buy more precisely and save real money without compromising on reliability.
What the condition classes mean
The classification into Grade A, B and C is a standard industry scale for the external condition of used devices. Important: it's about appearance and signs of use, not technical performance. Every device goes through the same technical inspection before sale – regardless of its condition class.
- Grade A – like new: no signs of use, or only visible on close inspection. Ideal if the device should look brand new.
- Grade B – very good: light scratches or minimal wear, barely noticeable in everyday use. 100% technically flawless and usually the best value for money.
- Grade C – good: more visible signs of use such as visible scratches or wear on the housing. Fully functional technically – the cheapest option with the biggest savings.
Technical condition vs. appearance
The most common misconception: that Grade C is "worse" than Grade A. That's only true cosmetically. A Grade C notebook with visible scratches on the housing can contain exactly the same tested technology as a Grade A device – just at a noticeably lower price. If cosmetic wear doesn't bother you, Grade C gives you the biggest savings.
